Agriculture needs investment: farmers

Australia's investment in agricultural research has slumped to levels not seen since the 1970s, farmers say.

The National Farmers' Federation (NFF), in a submission to the 2009 federal budget, lists 10 priority areas, including drought reform and greater spending in research and development.

Despite the economic crisis there were long-term structural challenges in agriculture that needed investment, the federation said.

"They are things like getting drought policy right," CEO Ben Fargher told ABC Television.

Farming families needed help through the worst drought in history, but help was required to assist them better manage and prepare for future dry periods.

The quarantine system also required fixing to avoid another horse flu-type outbreak.

Spending on research and development had been declining for many years at a time where it was needed in areas including research on food production with less water, Mr Fargher said

"We can't produce as much food as we once had with the resources we have."
